[REVIEW] We the Lion – Boy Oh Boy EP

There’s a noticeably tropical vibe to the four songs that make up We the Lion‘s recorded debut, but the band doesn’t beat you over the head with their more exotic flourishes. They’re always more mellow than manic. Instrumental opener “Friends and Relatives” smoothly mixes flute and vibraphone with a repeating guitar line that suggests small scale post-rock, and the result is a perfectly laid-back introduction to a consistently relaxed set of songs. Even the sole rocker of the bunch (“The Ocean & the Moon”) has enough of a melancholy undercurrent to keep things in check. “Ivan” is the highlight here, the tidiest culmination of all the tricks in their bag. It’s just a generally great song, with killer dynamics and a way with melody.
