This week’s shows (1/31/2011-2/6/2011)

Dr. Dog

Monday (1/31/2011): Hello Ocho headline their second free 529 show in 3 weeks, this time with Tasty Beverage and Ghost Bikini.  Hello Ocho is one of the more exciting live bands in Atlanta right now and definitely worth checking out if you haven’t seen them yet.  Tonight’s most exciting lineup is at The Earl, though, for the rescheduled Kylesa/Fight Amp show (the first date was a victim of Hothlanta).  Locals Wizard Smoke open what should be a pretty great night of metal.

Tuesday (2/1/2011): I’ve tried, but the new Smith Westerns album really doesn’t do much for me, and I’m clearly in the minority on that one.  Even if you share my ambivalence, their headlining show at the Drunken Unicorn might be worth going to for openers Yuck and Mood Rings.  If you haven’t downloaded Mood Rings’ wonderful debut EP yet, go get it here.

Wednesday (2/2/2011): Local new wave revivalists Siberia My Sweet headline The Earl.  We Were the States and Gun Party open.  Star Bar’s got The Husseins and Total Magic.

Thursday (2/3/2011): Sealions‘ synth-pop is always worth seeing live.  You can see them at The Earl on Thursday with Night Driving in Small Towns and Natalie Prass.  There’s also a solid free show at Star Bar, with Buffalo Bangers, Hip to Death, 40 Hells, Street Violence, and Omelet.

Friday (2/4/2011): Packed night.  I’ve always liked Dr. Dog‘s albums pretty well, but their live show is on another level.  If you’re even a casual fan, don’t miss them at The Masquerade with Head and the Heart and Buried Beds.  There are several good local shows on Friday, too.  Star Bar has southern rock courtesy of Ocha La Rocha and AM Gold.  Highland Inn Ballroom hosts recent Relapse signees Royal Thunder with Spirits and the Melchizedek ChildrenBlair Crimmins and the Hookers play The Earl with Chistabel and the Jons and Davina and the Harlots.  And finally, A. Grimes, Trench Party, Phantom Dog and Carp, and Goldilocks play 529.  A. Grimes’ debut EP is still getting frequent playtime a month later.  Look for a proper review later this week.

Saturday (2/5/2011): Local punks Charges headline 529, with Five Eight, Starfighter, and Baby Baby.  The Earl has The Booze, The Forty Fives, and Shovels and Rope (Cary Ann Hearts and Michael Trent).  Also on Saturday:  Audiophile, Ether Overdrive, and Pocket the Moon (see comments for more details).

  1. Don’t forget Audiophile (with Brennan Johnson, featuring members from Dubconscious, Collective Efforts, and Entropy), Pocket the Moon, and Ether Overdrive at Drunken Unicorn on 2/5. It’s only 5 bucks. 🙂

  1. No trackbacks yet.
