[LIVE REVIEW] Bear in Heaven & Cloudland Canyon at The Earl, 11/14/2010

In case you missed it last night, my live review of Bear in Heaven and Cloudland Canyon’s Sunday night show at The Earl is up over at Dead Journalist. You can read it here.

One thing that came up in the review that never fails to amuse me is John Philpot’s singing voice:  it’s actually that high.  Prior to seeing them live for the first time at Harvest of Hope back in March, I had always just assumed the vocals on the album had been manipulated by various effects or something.  Watching them adjust levels before their set at HoH proved otherwise.  Philpot was saying “check, check, check” into his mic in his regular speaking voice, and Adam Wills said, “No, try singing something in your normal register.”  Out came that high, strange, vaguely extraterrestrial voice.  It’s definitely unique, and something they use to their advantage.  The topic also comes up in Chad Radford’s very good interview with Wills from this weekend (definitely worth a read if you haven’t seen it yet).
